Whether its an unsolved mystery, a popular misconception, or sometimes just a big hoax urban legends are an inevitable part of any culture. But, plenty of these classic myths are actually true — and the truth is often more ghastly and macabre than the fiction. Even more interesting is how some of these fables originated. Myths have to start somewhere, and oftentimes it’s a dark chapter in history or a strange effect of our own minds. Sometimes, the boogeyman is real. And, that face you saw in the bathroom mirror? You weren’t imagining it. Here are one of the most popular urban legends still being told:-

Years ago, there were 3 girls, who went to high school together. They were best friends from childhood. And now were living together, in a rented apartment. 

One night of summer, they decided to have a sleepover party.

They spent a day planning their sleepover, so that it could be the best. They all were fond of Horror stories and movies. So, they decided to rent a scary movie. It was late at night when the 3 girls piled into a car and drove down to their local video rental store. But it was closed. The girls spent another half hour in a search of such store who could help them in renting a video of scary movie. 

Eventually, they found a store, which was not in a good condition, but they were left with no other option so, they went inside. The girls could not agree on a movie to rent, so one them asked the woman behind the counter, that if she had any suggestions. The lady said she had just the right thing for them, and went in to bring the video.

While they were waiting one of the girls noticed the video lying on the counter. It didn't have a box cover or any label and it seemed to be very dirty and stained. She was curious to see what it was, and reached to grab it. Just then the woman came, rushing out, and slammed her hand down on the tape, pulling it back. With a strange smile on her face, she commented, " That's not something you should be watching !! "

Then she handed, the horror video to them, while she was packing the video for them, the girl took the opportunity to swipe away the mysterious video tape, and stuffed it into the purse.

Later that night, when girls returned back to home, the girl who stole the video, took it out off her purse,and convinced other two girls to watch it. They put the video into the video recorder, and pressed PLAY. All of a sudden, the power went out and the room was plunged into darkness. However, the television was still on.

With a crackle of static, the video started playing and, on the screen, they saw a woman, tied to a wooden stake. She was surrounded by angry men and women who were carrying burning torches. They shouting and spitting on her and they set fire to the woods beneath the woman's feet.

The woman began laughing maniacally, and the people yelled out things like "Burn the witch !! " and " This is your punishment for practicing black magic !! " As the flames rose higher and higher, licking at the woman's face, she screamed out a curse, saying that all those ho witness her death will suffer the same fate in 2 days.

There was a screech of static and VCR began skipping sounds before it suddenly turned off. The terrified, girls sat in the dark for a long time until the power came back. They tried to convince each other that it must have been some coincidence. After a while, they agreed that they should return the video tape immediately.

When they arrived at the location of the video store, it was all gone. All they found was an abandoned building and an empty lot. There was no lady, no store,nothing. They all got frightened, and decided to go back, and forget all about this. They thought that it was just a bad dream watched with a open eyes.

Two days later, all the three girls were dead.  The first girl was found floating in a swimming pool. Her body was burned beyond recognition. The charred remains of the second girl were discovered in the middle of a park and the third girl was found in a furnace. 

When the police was investing the mysterious death, they reached at the apartment. In the apartment the room where they watched the video was burned completely. The only thing left was the video tape. 

The video tape was inexplicably left untouched by the flames.
